About Us

Congregation Shaare Shalom is a 501C non-profit organization which was established in April 1998 to serve the needs of the Middle Eastern Jewish community of Brooklyn New York and specifically the population of the Madison neighborhood. Our mission is to maintain a place of worship in accordance with the Orthodox Hebrew Jewish faith based on Sephardic Jewish tradition. In addition to being a place of worship congregants are encouraged to take advantage of the many classes offered in all aspects of the Jewish Faith so that they may increase their knowledge of Torah and Mitzvot thereby living their lives through the lens of Torah. Social functions geared towards strengthening community bonds are also an important part of our service to the congregants. All functions and activities of this congregation adhere to the dictates of the Written and Oral Torah, the Shulchan Aruch and Poskim, and in accordance with the Sephardic laws and customs of the Aram Sobah Sephardic Community of Brooklyn tradition.

The original founders of the synagogue were Joseph Torgueman and Joseph Falack. The roots of the synagogue actually date back to 1997 with 21 men praying in various private homes. The rapid population growth and demand for more space quickly became apparent and within 3 years two properties were acquired one located at 2021 Ave S and the other next door 2015 Ave S. This gave the synagogue a 100×100 footprint. In early 2015 the property directly across the street became available and was purchased by the synagogue. This building will be used to hold daily services while we begin our much anticipated construction on a brand new facility.
